The systematic persistence of a British archaeologist named Howard Carter led to the most memorable discovery in the history of archaeology. Carter believed that Tutankhamun was buried in The Valley of the Kings due the fragments bearing his name an of his wife Ankhesenpaaten discovery by Theodore Davis an American archaeologist who had a concession to dig in the valley. In 1914 a concession was granted to Lord Carnarvon, who funded excavation. During Carter’s finale season of excavating in the valley it was getting very depressing for him, he had been searching for several years with no sing of Tutankhamun. He was very close to giving up on the search at the valley and was thinking about moving his search to another location. Then on the morning of November 4, 1922 when Carter arrived at the site there was an unusual silence, due to the half of work. He quickly realized that something big has happened and to his surprise a step cut in the rock had been discovered. After clearing the debris of rocks and sand thirty feet down from the outer door they reached a second door identical to the first one they found while clearing the first sixteen steps. The moment had arrived when Carter made a tiny breach in the upper left hand corner of the sealed door. He inserred a candle, at first he couldn’t see anything since the flickering of the candle from the hot air escaping the tomb made out hard for him to adjust his eyes. Then spectacular objects of the room emerged, statues, chariots, inlaid furniture and gold everywhere. Carter was so excited he was speechless for a while. Lord Carnarvon unable to stand the suspense any longer, anxiously ask Carter, What could you see?….. Carter please….. Can you see anything?” Carter replied ”YES….. Wonderful things”. It took nearly ten years to clear and document the tomb, recording, photographing and preserving about 5,400 artifacts. It was believed that all royal tombs had been robbed of their treasures until the almost intact tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered with all treasures and information providing clues and insights of his life, making it the most phenomenal discovery of all time. Tutankhamun, The Boy King was about nine years old when he became a Pharaoh after his father Akhenaten died. Although the reign of Tutankhamun was short lived he was praised for reversing the tumultuous religious reforms of his father Akhenaten, who made Egyptian worship only one god, Aten “The Sun Disk”. Tutankhamun died when he was nineteen years old and was laid to rest for eternal life in The Valley of the Kings. Ancient Egyptian History is an ongoing process with new discoveries daily; one single new artifact can change history from one moment to the next. It’s a fascinating journey.
King Tut was a pharaoh during ancient Egypt’s New Kindom era, about 3,300 years ago. He ascended to the throne at the age of 9 but ruled for only ten years before dying at 19 around 1323 B.C.
Despite his brief reign, King Tut is perhaps Egypt’s best known pharaoh because of the wealth of treasures — including a solid gold death mask — found during the surprise discovery of his intact tomb in 1922.
Though several of the foremost excavators over the past century had declared there was nothing left to find in the Valley of the Kings, Howard Carter and his sponsor, Lord Carnarvon, spent a number of years searching for a tomb they weren’t sure existed. In November 1922, they found it. Carter has discovered not just an unknown ancient Egyptian tomb, but also one that had lain nearly un disturbed for over 3,000 years; what lay within astounded the world.
